Etsy is one of the quickest places to find out whether a design sells. Buyers arrive already looking for something made, gifted or personal, and you do not need a website, a mailing list or an ad budget to get your first order. Print on demand removes the other half of the risk: nothing is printed until someone has paid, so a design that does not sell costs you a listing fee rather than a box of unsold hoodies.

This guide covers how Etsy print on demand works with a UK producer, what you set up in Etsy before your first listing, how to get product photos that actually win clicks, and how personalised orders flow through without you retyping anything.

How Etsy print on demand works

The loop is simple once it is connected:

  • You design a product in allthe by putting your artwork on a blank from the catalogue.
  • You push it to your Etsy shop as a normal listing, with your photos, your price and every colour and size you chose.
  • A buyer orders on Etsy. The order flows into the allthe production queue automatically.
  • We print it in the UK, pack it under your brand and ship it to your buyer. The tracking goes back to Etsy, which sends the buyer the usual dispatch message.

You never touch the parcel, and there is no stock to buy, store or write off. You pay the production cost when an order comes in and keep the difference between that and your Etsy price.

Connecting your Etsy shop

You connect from Channels in the allthe dashboard. Etsy shows you exactly what you are approving: reading your listings and orders, creating and updating listings, and reading your shop settings. We deliberately never ask for permission to delete anything, so a listing we create is always yours to remove.

Once connected, your existing listings are imported, so if you already sell something we can make, you can point that listing at the matching allthe product rather than starting again. New products go the other way: pick one, check the preview, push it, and the Etsy listing is built for you with every colour and size, your images, the price converted into your shop's currency, and stock set to what can actually be produced.

If you are listing a whole range, bulk push does it in one pass and shows you the category, shop section and price each listing will be created with before anything exists on Etsy. That preview matters, because Etsy bills its listing fee the moment a listing goes live. Category mappings remember which Etsy category each kind of product belongs in, and section rules decide which of your shop sections a listing lands in, so a bulk push files itself neatly instead of arriving in a heap.

The full step-by-step is on the Get started with Etsy page.

Two things to set up in Etsy first

Both of these live in your own Etsy shop, so they are yours to control rather than ours to create.

  • A finished shipping profile. Etsy will not publish a listing without one, and it needs an origin postcode and at least one place you deliver to. You set the postage your buyer pays. Shops that have used another print service often have old, half-finished profiles left behind, and Etsy only refuses them at the moment you publish. If one of yours is incomplete, allthe tells you which one and what is missing.
  • A production partner. Etsy requires sellers who use a maker to name that maker on the listing. You add it once under Shop Manager, Settings, Production partners, then choose it in allthe when you push your first product. Only the shop owner can create it, so this is the one step we cannot do for you.

Dispatch times are handled for you. If your shop has never set a processing time, we add one on your first push, made to order at three to seven days, and you can change it on the listing whenever you like.

Product photos that sell: Mockup Studio

On Etsy, the first photo does most of the selling. It is the thumbnail in search, it is cropped square on mobile and landscape on desktop, and it is competing with forty other listings for the same glance. A flat product mock on a white background rarely wins that glance.

Mockup Studio, in your allthe dashboard, turns your product into a photographed shot with AI. You pick:

  • A scene: studio, lifestyle, urban, nature, flat lay, or a custom setting you describe.
  • A model: any, female, male, child, teen, or a pet, for the dog bandana crowd.
  • Framing: close-up, half body or full scene.

Tell the studio the photo is for Etsy and it starts from a close-up, because that is what we found working on Etsy itself. On page one of Etsy UK for "personalised apron" in October 2026, print-forward close crops led 6 of the 17 Bestseller listings while wide lifestyle scenes led just one. The rest of the page was the reverse. The studio's Etsy tips explain this in the app, and the crop editor shows the safe band so your design stays inside the part of the image Etsy shows on both mobile and desktop.

A few details that matter more than they sound:

  • The print stays your print. Image models tend to redraw a design rather than copy it, and they garble lettering. A "not as described" case on Etsy is the last thing you need, so every studio shot goes through a print restore step that puts your real artwork back onto the photographed garment, keeping the fabric's light and folds.
  • Re-crop for free. Each shot is a 2000px square, which meets Etsy's image size guidance. If it is too zoomed out, drag a tighter crop. A crop costs nothing, and small crops are upscaled so the thumbnail stays sharp.
  • Straight to the listing. Saved shots join the product's gallery and go to Etsy with the listing, up to Etsy's limit of ten images. The studio adds photos rather than reshuffling the ones you already have, so you decide the order. A close-up as photo one and a lifestyle shot as photo two or three is a good default.

Each shot uses one design credit.

Personalised products on Etsy

Personalised items are some of the best sellers on Etsy, and they are a natural fit for print on demand: you cannot stock every name in advance, so made to order is the only way the product can exist.

allthe products can carry personalisation slots: a name, a number, a date, or a photo. How much of that works on Etsy depends on what Etsy can collect from a buyer, and it is worth being clear about the limits.

  • Text personalisation works. Etsy collects one box of text from the buyer. Where your product has a single text field and nothing else for the buyer to supply, their answer is dropped onto the design and printed without you doing anything. Names on hoodies, initials on totes and dates on prints all work this way.
  • Two or more text fields come through for you to place. Etsy only has one box, so if your design needs a name and a number, the order still arrives with the buyer's wording saved on it, and you place it. Splitting one box back into several fields is not something worth guessing at.
  • Photo uploads do not work on Etsy. Etsy has no way to collect an image or logo from a buyer, so products that ask for a photo cannot be sold there. We tell you which of your products are affected before you push them, not after.

If photo personalisation is central to your idea, such as pet portraits, family photos on mugs or a club badge on kit, sell that range through a Shopify store with the allthe personaliser, or through an allthe storefront, where buyers can add both text and images with a live preview. Many sellers run both: Etsy for discovery and text-personalised gifts, and their own shop for the photo products. Our guide to personalised print on demand covers how the slots and previews work.

Etsy fees and pricing

Etsy charges its own fees, separate from production: a $0.20 listing fee per listing and per renewal, plus a transaction fee and payment processing on each sale. Check Etsy's current fee page before you set prices, because those fees come out of every order. Then work forwards: production cost from allthe, plus Etsy's fees, plus the postage you charge or absorb, plus the margin you want.

Because the listing fee is charged the moment a listing goes live, it pays to publish deliberately. Push your strongest designs first, see what gets favourites and sales, then widen the range. Bulk push's preview helps here, since you see exactly what will be created before Etsy charges anything.

Why UK production matters for Etsy sellers

If most of your buyers are in the UK, printing in the UK shows up in places Etsy buyers notice: shorter delivery estimates on the listing, no customs charges on the doorstep, and returns that do not travel abroad. Personalised gifts in particular are often bought for a date, and an honest delivery estimate in days rather than weeks wins those orders. We wrote more about local versus overseas print on demand if you are weighing it up.

Getting started

  1. Create a free allthe account. There is no subscription and no minimum order.
  2. Order a sample of the blank you plan to sell, and check the fabric and print before buyers do.
  3. Finish your Etsy shipping profile and add allthe as a production partner.
  4. Build two or three products, shoot them in Mockup Studio with an Etsy close-up as photo one, and push them.
  5. Let a few real orders run through before you scale the range.

FAQ

Do I need to buy stock to sell print on demand on Etsy?

No. Each item is printed after a buyer orders it, so there is nothing to buy up front. You pay production cost per order.

Will my buyer know who printed their order?

Parcels are white label, under your brand. Etsy does require you to name your production partner on the listing, which is Etsy's own transparency rule for sellers who use a maker.

Can buyers personalise products on Etsy?

Yes, with text. A single text field is printed automatically. Photo uploads are not possible on Etsy, because Etsy cannot collect an image from a buyer.

How long does an Etsy print on demand order take?

Made-to-order processing is set at three to seven days by default, then delivery on top. You can change the processing time on any listing.

Can I use Mockup Studio photos for other channels too?

Yes. Shots are saved to the product's gallery, so they can go to Shopify or your allthe storefront as well, and the studio has framing advice for each.
